Tahltan Band – Telegraph Creek
The Tahltan Band is one of two communities that make up the Tahltan Nation in northwestern British Collumbia. The Tahltan Nation are a proud people with a long and deep history of connection and stewardship of their territories. They have always been trail builders, with a powerful heritage of ancient trading routes throughout their territories that would rival the Inca. In recent years, as part of their efforts to develop a sustainable economic foundation, they have been seeking opportunities to revitalize and redevelop their trail systems and to encourage their members to get outdoors, live healthy active lives and reconnect with the Tahltan lands and territories.
We worked with the Tahltan Band to develop a mountain bike youth program. This included:
Youth Mountain Bike Day Camps
Construction of a bike park
Training for youth in trail construction & maintenance
Bike Maintenance workshops
The Chief’s Ride
The Chief’s Ride is an annual charity ride that goes between the Tahltan communities of Dease Lake and Telegraph Creek, a distance of 115km. The ride is a charity fundraiser for the communities’ emergency fund and involves community members, youth and visitors from as far away as Vancouver and Colorado. The Aboriginal Youth Mountain Bike Program was in the Tahltan with the Chief’s Ride in 2013 and 2014.
